This scheme was introduced by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister by distributing laptop to seven students. Cooperative and aided college students are given the facility of the Tamil Nadu Free Laptop Scheme to enhance their future. With this scheme, laptops will be provide free of cost to a total of 15.18 lakh students this year. The total cost for these free laptops are estimated to be Rs. 1,340.44 under TN Free Laptop Scheme.
The Tamil Nadu Government has started this Free Laptop Scheme by following the lines of the Government of West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The free laptop scheme was first started in the year 2011 by Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalithaa. Till now, more than 37, 88,528 students have availed the free laptops at an outlay of Rs.5,552.39 crore.

Tamil Nadu Free Laptop Scheme 2020
- The Tamil Nadu government is giving free laptops to the regional government and aided college students to improve the level of education and to enhance the future through the Tamil Nadu Free Laptop Scheme. The information from the senior official of the Tamil Nadu Electronics Corporation (ELCOT) shows that the government is planning to provide laptops to 1.5 million students.
- The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu K Palaniswami himself has made a statement that 15 lakh laptops will be provided to the students. Since the start of the scheme, the government has procured and distributed 32,35,894 laptops in five phases.
- All the laptops given have been procured and bid by the tender. The possibility of issuing laptops is expected soon in the year 2020 as well.
